Mark Petzinger received a B.S. in political science from the University of Idaho and a J.D. from the University of Memphis. While in law school, Petzinger earned the Herff Law Scholarship and served as the articles editor of the Memphis Law Review. After law school, he served as a law clerk for the Hon. Robert M. McRae, chief U.S. district judge, Western District of Tennessee. After the clerkship, he practiced with the former firm of Shank, Irwin and Conant in Dallas, and then had successive roles as in-house labor and employment counsel with JCPenney, American Airlines, Sears, Wal-Mart and The ServiceMaster Company. He served for 29 years, both active and reserve, in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer and retired with the rank of captain in 2006.
Petzinger joined the Office of General Counsel in 2014. He currently advises and provides training regarding employment law matters – particularly the FMLA (family medical leave), FLSA (wage and hour), and ADA (disabilities). His areas of responsibility also include student and medical resident matters (disciplinary and academic) and research integrity. Petzinger handles employment and student related litigation in all forums – state and federal courts.
