Lela Young received a B.A. in history from the University of Virginia. She earned a J.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where she served as editor-in-chief of the Tennessee Law Review. After law school, Young served as law clerk to the Hon. Susan H. Black, United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, in Jacksonville, Florida. After her clerkship, Lela practiced employment law with the firm of Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan in Atlanta.

Young returned to Knoxville where she served the University as an adjunct professor in the 1L research and writing program at UT College of Law and joined the Office of General Counsel in 2008. Her current practice focuses on academic and employment issues, particularly faculty employment policies, academic policies and faculty-related litigation.
